This half day workshop will run from 12:30 until around 16:30 at my home close to junction 31 of the M1 and the junction of the A57 with the A1, at Worksop.

It is a new workshop designed to remove the mystery from working with layers in Adobe Photoshop and Elements. Layers are one of the most powerful features in these programs and when you master them you will be able to take the processing of your images to a new level.

It also looks at how to use textures to achieve those wonderful effects you see on Flickr and the Internet. In detail we will be covering;

What are layers?
How do they work?
What are masks?
How do I use masks?
How can I blend two or more images together?
How to remove objects and place them in another image or on a coloured background
Blending modes and how to use them
Sharpening images
Where can I download free textures?
How do I download and organise my texture collection?
How can I create artworks from my images using textures?
How do I download and use artistic frames for my images?
and more…
Included in the price will be a free CD for each participant containing some copyright free textures and frames for you to start your collection and use on your own images at home. The CD will also include a pdf file with the basic techniques and settings I will be showing you on the day and links to resources on the Internet to help you further, including download links for more free textures and borders. I also include in the price refreshments.

Maximum number of participants will be five so all get individual attention and a chance to ask questions.

Payment on the day by cash or cheque, or in advance by PayPal or BACs direct bank transfer if you use Internet banking.

Friday 2nd April 2010 – Landscape Workshop, Peak District

We will meet near Hathersage an hour before dawn to get in position ready to capture the sunrise. After spending some time perfecting our technique, learning how to use ND grads properly, working on composition and how to use the camera in full manual mode we will make our way to Hathersage for Breakfast, which is included in the price.

If sunrise is too early for you, you are welcome to join the group for breakfast and start your day then.

Over breakfast we will look at some of the images captured and spend some time briefly looking at workflow with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Once refreshed, we will head into Padley Gorge to capture the beautiful waterfalls, rock pools and winter trees, looking at extending exposures to get blurred water effects and other tricks and tips to improve your images.

After lunch, we will make our way to a new moorland location to put our newfound skills to use making images of the dusk light and sunset (weather permitting) before heading home with a memory card full of wonderful images. If you prefer not to stay out for sunset you can of course, set off home at any time.

I can’t guarantee the weather, but I often get my best shots when it is a bit ‘moody’ out there. If the weather does get really appalling, which is rare, we can always retire to a local pub or cafe for some refreshments and break out the laptop to look at images made so far in the day, processing techniques and to have a Q&A session (from which I always learn something from my students).

You can bring any camera – from compacts to full spec DSLR’s. The only thing you really will need to get the best from the day is a tripod. I limit group sizes to six so that I can give everyone plenty of individual attention to deal with your needs and to go at your pace.

There is some walking involved, including some uphill, so you will need to be fairly mobile, but there is nothing too strenuous.

The cost is £65 and this includes breakfast, but not lunch. Please bring a packed lunch to enjoy in the field. After the workshop I will also email you a pdf file with some of the tips and techniques along with further resources detailed for you to refer back to when you get home.

Payment on the day by cash or cheque, or in advance by PayPal or BACs direct bank transfer if you use Internet banking.

Saturday 10th April 2010 – Seascapes & Long Exposure Workshop – North Yorkshire Coast.

We will be meeting early up on the North Yorkshire coast to catch sunrise. The workshop will include

using ND Grads properly to balance exposures
how to use your lightmeter to get perfect exposures
perfecting composition
Using neutral density filters for those artistic smooth water images
How to operate your camera in full manual mode to revolutionise the quality of your images
shooting in RAW verses Jpeg
Basic image editing techniques over lunch
and much more
The exact locations will be dictated by the tides and light but we can expect to visit at least two places from Boggle Hole, Runswick Bay, Whitby, Staithes and Flamborough Head.

Breakfast is included in the price and I recommend bringing a packed lunch. Over breakfast we will use the laptop to review images from the morning and look at some image processing techniques. Lunch is a good opportunity for you to quiz me on anything and everything photography related. The group is kept small to a maximum of six participants so all get plenty of individual attention and I give instruction at your level without using loads of jargon to baffle and confuse.

Both DSLR and Compact camera users are welcome. The one thing you will need to get the most from the day is a tripod no matter what camera you use. Without it you won’t be able to apply the techniques we will be working with.

I can’t guarantee the weather or wonderful sunrises and sunsets – we will have to see what the day brings, but I shoot whatever the weather. If it really is too foul at some point in the day, we can always retire to a local pub or cafe and get the laptop out and look at images, process them and have question and answer sessions. I always learn something I didn’t know from my students, so we all benefit.

The workshop costs £65 and includes breakfast. Please bring your own packed lunch. The start time will be one hour before sunrise for the keen, although if you prefer a lie in, you can join us for breakfast. The workshop will run until about half an hour after sunset, although you are free to head off home at any time that suits your plans.

After the day I will also email you a free pdf file with details of the techniques and settings we will be discussing on the day for you to refer back to.

Payment on the day by cash or cheque, or in advance by PayPal or BACs direct bank transfer if you use Internet banking.

PLEASE WATCH THIS SPACE FOR AN ANNOUNCEMENT OF A WORKSHOP COVERING ALL THE NEW FEATURES IN ADOBE LIGHTROOM 3 – as soon as it is released.
